The Iron Mining Association of Minnesota is the trade association for the iron ore mines located in Northeast Minnesota as well as hundreds of vendors that supply their products and services to the mining industry.
The companies that operate in Minnesota include ArcelorMittal, Cliffs Natural Resources, Essar Steel of Minnesota, Magnetation, Mesabi Nugget and U.S. Steel. Iron mining contributes over 3.1 billion dollars to the economy of Minnesota every year in the form of purchases, wages and benefits, taxes and royalties. Taxes alone are over $100 million. The mines employ 3,600 men and women directly with an additional 10,000 employed by the vendors who provide products and services to the mines.
New mines and production lines are estimated to increase these numbers significantly. Several new mining facilities are under construction and will produce value added products.
